MCG
The MCG is a non-profit, open international group
that represents a technical development forum for current security needs.
The MCG has source control and further develops the Meta-Certificate
Standard (MCS), a proposed lingua franca for worldwide Internet certification.
The problem
The Internet is growing at explosive rates, and
yet it is constrained by security issues. For example,
X.509 is showing its age and flaws as the Internet grows from what it was
15 years ago. Future widespread use of the Internet for commerce and business
may not be able to rely worldwide on current mid-scale solutions for certification
as represented by X.509, PGP and centralized control bodies based on a
PKI formed by CAs and TTPs. When traffic achieves mega-scale proportions
and national borders become just a .xx extension at the end of an URL,
it may be more and more futile to try to enforce central and hierarchical
control of a distributed system owned by none.
The solution
The MCG is developing the Meta-Certificate
or MC, defined as a non-hierarchical and distributed certification system
based on a secure standardized platform, offering certified Objects and
an archetypical trust model. The archetypical trust model interoperates
with all current models but does not depend on PKIs, CAs or TTPs, and does
not need CRLs. MCs also implement a generalized certification model, introducing
the concepts of intrinsic and combined certification
-- besides the usual certification concepts which are unified under the
denomination of extrinsic certification.
The MCS (Meta-Certificate Standard) is being discussed by the MCG and will
be available for Licensing, including source
code.
